KARACHI: Justice Maqbool Baqar became the new chief justice of the Sindh High Court after taking the oath of his office on Friday.

Acting Governor Agha Siraj Durrani, who is the speaker of the Sindh Assembly, administered the oath to him on the SHC premises.

Justice Baqar, who recently survived a terrorist attack, was born in 1957 and enrolled as an advocate in 1981.

He was elevated to the SHC in Aug 2002 as an additional judge. Later he was confirmed in 2003.

Meanwhile, Justice Mushir Alam, the former chief justice of the SHC, was elevated to the Supreme Court after Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary administered the oath to him at the Karachi registry of the apex court on Friday.

Born in 1956, Justice Alam was the longest-serving judge of the SHC. He also held many offices of the bar association and also served as standing counsel for the federal government.
