CHITRAL, Sept 7: Chairman of Human Right Programme, Chitral, Niaz A Niazi has demanded of the government to take notice of the growing number of suicide cases of women in the district and take concrete steps to contain the negative trend.

In a press statement here on Friday, he said that suicide had taken the shape of a full-fledged social problem, but no effort was made to evaluate the causes of the tendency.

He warned that the growing trend of suicide among women had shattered the social fabric and there was a need to take the issue seriously by the relevant authorities.

He demanded of the government to send a team of senior psychiatrists to Chitral to find out the factors, which resulted in people, especially women, ending their own lives.

Meanwhile, in a community consultative jirga held here on Friday, various stakeholders presented their proposals for incorporation in the district development strategy.

The representatives of civil society organisations also participated in the discussion and based on their opinion the sectors of health and communications were prioritised for interventions.

The organisers said that a development strategy was being formulated for the speedy development of Chitral, which would be funded by the European Union.

The stakeholders called for special development projects and packages for the district to end the sense of deprivation among the people.
