SAHIWAL, Sept 1: Up to 511 prisoners, including two women, have been in the condemned cells of the Sahiwal jail for the last five years, Jail Superintendent Gulzar Jutt told Dawn on Sunday.

There have been no executions in the prison since 2006, and in 2008 President Asif Zardari imposed a moratorium on execution. An official said that of the 511 condemned prisoners, seven belonged to banned terrorist outfits, who have been shifted to undisclosed locations “because of security reasons”.

ROBBERY: Three gunmen took away a car, a pistol and Rs150,000 from the staff of a CNG station on GT Road, police said.

Sajid Chohan, owner of the station, told police the gunmen attacked the facility early in the morning. Ghala Mandi police registered a case.
