KARACHI, Aug 28: President-elect Mamnoon Hussain said on Wednesday he would take every possible measure to improve the law and order situation in Karachi after assuming office next month.

Speaking to business leaders, traders and industrialists at a dinner organised in his honour by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), he said being a Karachiite he felt sorry for the city’s people and that he would fulfil his responsibilities in this regard after taking oath as president of the country.

“The government can’t even think about running its affairs smoothly until it fixes Karachi’s problems,” he said. “The city is revenue engine of the country and the national economy depends on Karachi’s situation.

“The federal government has shown its willingness and the interior minister is working on a plan [to improve the situation].”

Responding to issues regarding taxes and energy crisis raised by KCCI president Haroon Agar, he assured the business community that their complaints would be looked into. “I assure you that I will play role of a bridge between the authorities concerned and you.”
