ISLAMABAD, Aug 17: Over 15 officers of the capital police and administration on Saturday appeared before the three-member committee formed to probe into the Thursday standoff in the capital and fix responsibility against those who permitted former MNA Zamarud Khan to breach the security line and meet the gunman.

The committee, comprising an additional secretary, a joint secretary and the director of the National Crisis Management Cell, has been formed on the direction of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

Those who recorded their statements were Chief Commissioner Javed Pal, Deputy Commissioner Amir Ahmed Ali, Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Ali, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sikandar Hayat, SSP Dr Mohammad Rizwan, SPs Mohammad Ilyas, Mustansar Feroz; ASP Rizwan Gondal, DSP Naeem Iqbal, Inspectors Hakim Khan, Rukhsar Mehdi, Tanveer Abbasi, Fayaz Ranjha, Qasir Abbas and Qasim Niazi.

The committee members also visited the crime scene at Jinnah Avenue and inspected the spots and locations of the gunman and his wife and the police force.

Besides, they also inquired about the location from where Mr Khan had breached the security line to meet the gunman – Sikandar.

Sources in the police said a list of over 15 policemen had been prepared by considering them responsible for the breach of security by the former MNA. “They were deputed at the spot from where Mr Khan crossed the security line and walked towards the gunman,” the sources added.

However, senior police officers are backing each other and they have prepared a summery and moved it to the chief commissioner office to reshuffle them.

The sources said SP city and SP investigation, who were present at the crime scene, would be reshuffled while SP Industrial Area and SP rural would also be posted out to justify the reshuffling.

However, some police officers are of the view that in presence of seniors, including the SSP and SPs, how junior police officers like inspectors and constables could have intercepted the former MNA.

Although the senior officers had turned down Mr Khan’s request to meet the gunman, they did not ask their subordinates to intercept him.

But as usual, the subordinates are most likely to be made the scapegoats to save the skins of the seniors, the officers added.

Meanwhile, the Kohsar police on Saturday took the wife of the gunman into custody.

Later, she was shifted to the Police Line Headquarters where her two children were also brought from the women police station.

The arrest was made after doctors declared the woman’s condition stable. Besides, physiatrist Dr Rizawn Taj also declared her mentally fit. She has already recorded her statement with the police denying any information about her husband’s act.

However, she told the police that her husband was a drug addict but had given up the addiction after a successful treatment in March this year. Once he was a successful businessman in Dubai but suffered losses, she told police.

On the other hand, the injured gunman is still being kept in the ICU of Pims where he is recovering gradually. He is also under the treatment of a physiatrist.

However, the final assessment report about the mental condition of the gunman is likely to be issued on Monday, said Pims spokesman Dr Wasim Khawja.
