LAHORE, April 29: A representative democratic movement is sine qua non for the establishment of a democratic political system for achieving social justice in a society.

“Any society that infringes norms of justice cannot survive,” said retired justice Tanveer Ahmad Khan in his keynote speech at the national moot of National Bank of Pakistan Employees Union (CBA) on the premises of bank’s regional headquarters here on Monday.

Mr Khan praised the role of the NBP union for safeguarding the rights of workers and exposing flawed policies of the previous regime.

Union General-Secretary Akbar Ali Khan said through concerted struggle of the bank employees, the union reached an agreement with the new management of the National Bank, including reinstatement of Syed Jehangir who was shown the door for raising voice for the rights of workers. He urged the management to resolve the remaining outstanding demands of the workers, including increase in pay scales which had not been revised for the last three years, recruitment of the children of employees against prescribed quota and promotion of the eligible staff.

Pakistan Workers Confederation General-Secretary Khurshid Ahmed urged all political parties to take special measures for welfare of working class, especially repeal of Section 27-B of the Banking Companies Ordinance that restricted the employees from exercising their fundamental right to form trade unions.

NBP union’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter Secretary-General Ziauddin Akhtar said all political parties should chalk out special plans for welfare of the working class. He also called for establishment of wage board for bank workers.
