RAWALPINDI, May 11: In Rawalpindi district, polling day was not without violence as at least four activists were killed and 18 others injured in exchange of fire and physical fight.

A Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf worker was killed in a clash between the supporters of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf when the PTI supporters started celebrating victory at Shamasabad on Saturday night.

Soon after the announcement of the results, supporters of different political parties started firing in jubilation in different areas of the city, but Shamasabad was the most troubled spot where the election offices were located.

However, the elite force commandos and armored personnel carrier (APC) were sent to the area to control the situation. They later dispersed the workers.

In Doltala village of Gujar Khan, two workers, one of PTI and the other of PML-N were shot dead while six others were injured in a shootout between the two parties. They were celebrating victory when the clash took place.

Earlier, two women groups from Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz started quarrelling with each other. Their male members also joined the free for all.

However, police intervention restricted violence from flaring up. They registered criminal cases against the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) candidates from Rawalpindi.

Police said as the quarrel started between the two groups, Jadoon group attacked their rivals with batons and allegedly opened fire that resulted in the injuries to six people belonging to PML-N.

However, the reinforcement of police helped control the situation. The victims who sustained multiple injuries were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital. They were identified as Nasir Khan, Ahmed Khan, Zahid Khan, Shamraiz, Tariq and Tamraiz Khan.

The investigation officer SI Amanat Ali said that an FIR was registered against Pakistan People’s Party candidate Babar Jadoon, candidate for PP-12, his brother Zubair Jadoon and a supporter Abid Qureshi.

At a polling station No 276 set up in a government school on Chaudhry Bostan Road in Chaklala, a minor scuffle took place between the activists of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) when the latter objected to the presence of a senior official of Bahria Town.
