HYDERABAD, March 19: College teachers boycotted classes on Tuesday on the call of Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) to protest over the murder of Prof Sibt-i-Jafar Zaidi in Karachi and demand arrest of his killers.

Prof Zaidi was the principal of Government Degree College, Liaquatabad, and a renowned soz and marsiah khwaan.

According to a press release issued by the SPLA on Tuesday, teachers boycotted classes in three regions of Sindh and organised separate protests in various colleges.

SPLA spokesman Prof Anwar Sanghar Kandhro said that teachers held protest meeting at the Government College, Qasimabad, to demand exemplary punishment for the murderers of Prof Zaidi.

A general body meeting was also held at the college and fatehas were offered for the slain principal and Nasrullah Kingrani, the brother of Prof Aziz Kingrani. Members of the meeting demanded arrests of the killers of Mr Zaidi and Mr Kingrani.

A general body meeting was also held at Girls College, Qasimabad. Prof Rukhsana Mughal and others speakers warned of taking to the streets if the killers were not arrested.

Another protest meeting of college teachers was held at Government Muslim Science College under the chairmanship of Prof Dr Imam Ali Beg. Members of the meeting offered fateha for Prof Zaidi and demanded the arrest of Prof Zaidi’s killers.

Meanwhile, SPLA central president Ali Murtaza and secretary-general Siddique Unnar warned that if government did not arrest the culprits then the teachers would widen the scope of their protests.

SANGHAR: A day of mourning was observed in colleges in Sanghar district on Tuesday.

Black flags were hoisted at college buildings as the teachers wore black armbands to mourn the death of Prof Zaidi. Teachers condemned the brutal murder while demanding from the government to arrest the killers.

Unit meetings of SPLA were held in all the colleges across the district. Addressing the meeting at Sanghar College, Sanghar SPLA secretary-general Prof Siddique Unar recalled Dr Zaidi as great educationist and writer and termed hs death as a great loss for the academia and students.
