Couple dies on road

KARAK, Oct 6: A newly married couple died as a result of a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a tractor here on Saturday. Police sources informed that Rashid Iqbal, son of Gul Nawab, resident of Chokara, going to Amberi Kala on his motorcycle along with his wife, Arfa Tanveer, rammed his motorcycle into a tractor coming from the opposite direction near Naray Khawa. The couple died on the spot.

The driver of the tractor managed to escape after the incident. Father of Rashid Iqbal registered FIR in Takht Nusrati police station against the driver Abdul Qadir.—Correspondent

Man shot dead

MANSEHRA, Oct 6: A man was shot dead and another was injured when a group of armed men opened fire on them in Nimlian area on Saturday.

Mohammad Amir, while lodging FIR with the police, stated that his brother, Mohammad Abid, was on way to Mansehra from his village when Mohammad and his accomplices hiding in a graveyard opened indiscriminate fire on him leaving him dead on the spot.

He said when his uncle, Zaheer Ahmad, reached the spot after the incident assailants also opened fire and injured him critically. The body was handed over to relatives after autopsy at King Abdullah Teaching Hospital. The Sadar police after lodging FIR started efforts to apprehend the culprits who fled the scene.—Correspondent

Inquiry ordered into fake letter

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: The home and tribal affairs department has ordered inquiry against an official of the Afghan Commissionerate for writing a fake official letter.

An official statement issued here on Saturday said the department had appointed additional secretary (political) Dr Mirza Ali Mehsud as inquiry officer to probe the matter relating to writing of a fake official letter by Mohammad Ibrahim Khattak, assistant commissioner at the Afghan Commissionerate.

Commissioner Afghan Refugees has been provided copies of the charge-sheet and statement of allegations against the accused officer to be served upon him. The department also directed commissioner Afghan refugees to provide record and documentary proofs pertaining to the fake correspondence to the inquiry officer. The inquiry officer has been asked to submit his fact-finding report before the competent authority within a month.—Bureau Report

Varsity syndicate polls

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Mohammad Abbas was elected member of the syndicate of the Agricultural University unopposed in the annual elections held on Saturday. He was elected from the cadre of lecturers for three years, according to a press release.

The unopposed election of Mr Abbas as member of syndicate of the Agricultural University is a manifestation of his capabilities and popularity among his colleagues. All 40 lecturers of the university reposed confidence in him by electing him unopposed as their representative in the syndicate.

Burnt school, library renovated

MARDAN, Oct 6: The Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) has renovated the high school and library of the burnt Paul Lutheran Church in Mardan within three days. The church was ransacked and set ablaze by the mobsters who took to the streets on September 21 to protest against the blasphemous video made by an American.

Following the instructions of Dr Ihsan Ali, Vice-Chancellor of the university, which he issued during his visit of the church, the staff started rehabilitation and renovation activities on the affected church building. The AWKUM staff renovated the entire building of the school and provided new apparatus, equipment for physics, chemistry and biology laboratories, including modern furniture for laboratories and classrooms. New books for the Church library have also been provided. A function was also arranged on the premises of the church after completion of the work, attended also by the Christian community members.—Correspondent

Installation of CCTVs

PESHAWAR, Oct 6: In order to curb anti-social activities, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed owners of all the public call offices to install close circuit television cameras.

The home and tribal affairs department, in a statement on Saturday, directed the owners of the PCOs to install the cameras with DVRs for recording all visitors and keeping the data for a month along with a register to be maintained for recording name, father’s name, address and identity card number of each caller.

The home department has issued necessary instructions to all the divisional commissioners and the district coordination officers for imposition of the ban under section 144 of the CrPC in their respective areas to regulate the functions of the PCOs and to ensure compliance.—Bureau Report
