RAWALPINDI, July 26: Pirwadhai police have registered a case against more than 20 Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) men on the charges of forcibly entering a constable’s home, taking away cash and jewellery, roughing up his wife and children and briefly keeping them in illegal custody.

Police said the case was registered on a court order after Constable Asif Mehmood posted at Sadiqabad police station filed a petition in the court of a sessions judge.

In his complaint, the constable, a resident of Muslimabad in Pirwadhai, said associated with police department for the last 13 years, he had carried out some successful raids against drug smugglers.

He said on July 8 ANF Inspector Abid along with 20 to 25 other armed personnel entered his home in his absence and harassed his wife and children.

He alleged: “Intruders tore clothes of my wife and children. Later, they escaped with Rs40,000, gold ornaments and two mobile phones.” The constable alleged that they also took away his wife and children and kept them in illegal confinement for more than 12 hours.

He said as some residents of the street informed him about ANF men taking away his family, he and others went to the ANF office to get his wife and children freed.

In his complaint, the constable said the motive behind harassing his family was a police raid on a truck and recovering large quantity of narcotics. He said he had received information that an attempt of smuggling of narcotics to Lahore from Peshawar was being made on a mini-truck. He added that ANF staff was also working on the same information.

However, the constable said police intercepted the truck and recovered narcotics after its driver opted to use the highway instead of Motorway where the ANF staff was waiting for it.

He said the ANF officials were unhappy with him over the raid and had been “conveying their displeasure” from time to time.

He said during raid on his house, ANF men were unable to find any narcotics.

Constable Mehmood said after he failed to convince his superiors for registering a case against ANF men, he went to court.

ANF’s Colonel Mohammad Riaz told Dawn that no such incident was in his knowledge.
