ISLAMABAD, Dec 28: A constable allegedly stole a motorcycle from the Margalla police station but brought it back after his involvement in the crime was exposed, sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

The sources said the police arrested a man on the charge of his involvement in car lifting and recovered a 30-bore pistol, four rounds and a jammer used to paralyse satellite tracking system along with a motorcycle from his possession on December 24.

The accused along with the recovery was kept in the Margalla police station. The constable - IH - of Golra police came to the Margalla station on December 25 on a 'reserve duty.' He was spotted by Javed Iqbal, also a constable, trying to unlock the motorcycle (UM-764) recovered from the car lifting accused. When asked, IH told Javed: “This is my motorcycle and I am trying to unlock it as I have lost its keys.” After this, IH drove away the motorcycle.

Later, the investigating officer in the car lifting case, Sub-Inspector Abdul Sattar Baig found the bike missing. On inquiry, Javed told him that he had seen IH taking away the bike.

The SI contacted the in-charge of the reserve police and complained about the theft committed by his subordinate. Later, IH reached the Margalla police station along with the motorcycle and tendered an apology to the police to avoid punishment.

He told the police that he had taken away the bike and parked it in front of a utility store at F-8 Markaz. Later, the Margalla police lodged a complaint against the constable with the office of their SP. The sources said a case would be registered against the constable and he would be arrested if the inquiry found him guilty of the theft.
