Pakistani jets garner interest at Dubai air show

DUBAI: Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) ,Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman said on Sunday that Pakistan has achieved remarkable successes in its war against terror despite limited resources and is being viewed as a role model in this regard.

Speaking to media at the inauguration ceremony of Dubai Air Show in United Arab Emirates (UAE), the PAF chief said that the successful conduct of the anti terrorist operations have improved the law and order situation in the country paving way for economic progress.

The Air Chief said that the participation of Pakistan Air Force in this Air Show is a matter of great pride for us and many countries in general and Islamic countries in particular have shown interest in the JF-17 Thunder aircraft.

Later on he also visited various stalls at the show and met with high ranking officials of the air forces of various countries including Air Vice Marshal, Ibrahim Nasser Mohammad Al Alawi, Commander UAE Air Force and Air Defence.

Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, were also present at the occasion.

According to PAF Spokesman, Super Mushshak aircraft of Pakistan Air Force has been put up for static as well as aerial display in the Air Show.

The Dubai Air Show was inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of UAE.

A large number of delegations from different countries including Air Chiefs of a number of Air Forces are participating in the event.

The Pakistan Pavilion in the event is set up by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra.

It is my request to the Pakistan Airforce to include Pakistani Civilian Research Companies and Universities in the Research and Development. America and Europe follow this model. At present Civilians are kept far behind from Management positions and also no University is ever given any project of Research. For the Fifth generation fighter program development these aspects must be given a due consideration. The foundations of Lockheed, Boeing, Mcdonald douglas etc were laid by Civilians and Defense ministry gave them enough funding to develop the amazing machines that we see today. Developing an atmosphere of mistrust where Civilians are considered less-patriotic must come to an end.

The same plane has been on display and demonstrated on previous Air Shows in Dubai, Farnborough, Paris etc.. since 2010. Many countries have 'shown interest in buying these planes' in the past, and yet, not a single delivery or an order tells you how successful it has been in competing with other fighter jet manufacturers from around the world!

No matter how patriotic or happy i am, it wont change the reality, we have been hearing about the potential customers since last few years, but million dollar question is where are they. I am sorry but sooner or later we have to take it as a pinch of salt as PAF is not a marketing company, we need professionals here. PAF asusual failed misreably once again and they would be in future if they keep on commiting the same mistake, let it leave to the experts and you do what you are expert at i.e., called demo.

we need the will and vigour as we put in practice in developing nuclear weaponry and now are amongst the leaders in Reaseach and development to develop our own jet engines Once we achieve air supremacy through self sufficiency that is the final chapter in economic trajectory and become a world powerhouse

@Nav The reason is that European and American Aerospace companies have dedicated Marketing specialists and they are MBAs with aero-space and electrical engineering background. On the other hand in Pakistan only the Serving Army Officer or a high ranked GD pilot with no expertise in Marketing is usually tasked with selling this aircraft.

@Nav In case you have missed the news, JF-17 has already won an export order which was announced during Paris Airshow earlier this year. Please understand that defence export is highly competitive and defence giants have established their hold on such deals. They have highly paid marketing teams, lots of money to bribe officials and support of their heavyweight governments. Pakistan is very small player trying to fish in the pool of these alligators. It can never be easy.

@Haroon You are very right. Foundation of research is always laid in Universities. In fact a nation's fate in science and technology depends on how good the universities are. As far as I know, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and defence production are already working together on numerous projects. Many civillian engineers and scientists are working in AWC, POF, CAE and other such establishments where development work takes place on defence products. Actually GIDS (Global Integrated Defence Solutions) is almost entirely made up of civillian professionals.

@Factual This research is almost negligible if we compare it with the developed world. Also we all know that who is calling the shots in NUST. UETs and Private universities are kept away from such projects. Moreover you are right that in AWC, POF, CAE etc the civilian engineers are working, but the doors of promotion or reaching the top spot is only reserved for the Military officers. This type of environment begets favoritism rather than any competition.

Nuclear weapons, numerous missiles, Al-Khalid tank, variety of arms and ammunition for export, drones, JF17 and trainer aircraft are a feather in the caps of our arm forces that makes the nation proud. What has the democracy given us? Loot, plunder, daily scandals, injustice, nepotism, subjugation and corrupting of police and bureaucracy, and a national culture which has done away with with even a trace of ethics, morals and respect of law.

@Haroon you are wrong, POF and HMC, HIT all has civilians for marketing purposes, they do have professionals to demonstrate it. A new entrant like Pakistan in defence export normally has to prove their hardware worth by equipping own armed forces first and showcase it to world Defence deals are mostly involve a diplomatic efforts, Lockheed, Boeing, Saab, BAE are not purely base their efforts on marketing. These big players dont allow smaller players into the market unless its a negligible or no threat to them at all. So Pakistan focus on those countries who normally cant afford to buy western hardware.

Not even a single! whereas Pakistan has already got an order, its not like a cake that you can bake it within 45 mins, its a fighter plane loaded with different things which takes time..... you should worry about tejas which is under production since decades and still nowhere to be seen ....

I witnessed the 2011 Dubai Air Show and in the flight demo, our JF-17 was equal to the US F-16 on all parameters. Thousands were a witness to this, friends appreciated and the jealous just walked away. Long live Pakistan

A company that has built a jet for its defence purposes but yet has to import the 70cc motorbike engines or the 1000cc small car engines from japan, korea etc. Why cannot we manufacture a small car that can fulfil the local demand? Its such a big market but the mafia who have invested billions in importing cars will not allow it to happen. Such a shame. We can build tanks, planes, missiles but not a simple car or even a rickshaw.

Training plane was a good job should get a lot of sales but the fighter plane unfortunately a nuts and bolts job nothing to get excited about wouldn't stand a chance against new composite faster and more agile fighters it's a good first try a good foundation to build on it may still have a market in some areas so may still get sales

@Skeptic Sir...the discussion is about aircrafts and not Motorcycles. The production of aircraft is very limited and first few years production will be for induction in PAF fleet. Selling to other countries will take time. Even US or French manufacturers need years to give delivery against purchase orders. When Pakistan had purchased F-16 it took few years to deliver to Pakistan.

Very good Team Pakistan! Proud to see JF-17 being planned and constructed in Pakistan. No airplane in the modern era is 100% inhouse. Even Boeing air planes have parts from over 100 countries, including Pakistan. 2nd generation JF-17 is in production and being delivered to PAF and I am looking fwd to the 3rd generation with additional hardpoints and payload. The final endgame for Pakistan's deterrance is: ICBM with MIRV and nuclear submaries.

@azmat its all about priorities! private sector of Pakistan love to just get cheaper way of doing things and making engines for 70CC is not on HMC or PAC list at all ;) No one is stopping private sector to invest in such ventures which indeed will work as all washing machine makers in Pakistan now making motor bikes there is no brain gone into that at all but pure profit it the key!

@Skeptic This problem is not unique to Pakistan, every new sellers have taken their time to gain confidence of the buyers. Hopefully if some countries have shown interest Pakistan one day will make its way despite hard competition. At least at this stage we can maintain a supply to our own airforce to replace the ageing planes. An upgrade version of this fighter is under way.

Interesting to see how many ignorant people are in this world... PAF may have struck a deal to 'deliver' its first JF-17 to Burma (Myanmar) in 2017. Even than, anything could happen between now and 2017 - especially in the wake of the elections and new government that will take over soon. And Burma, is by no means a great military power that could make the manufacturer proud! Incidentally, Burma is also the same country which is expelling and killing Rahengya Muslims. This is tantamount to Pakistan buying jets from Israel, while it kills and occupies the Palestenian land. Real Proud of PAF!!!

Knowledge is said to be power. Pakistan selling this jet openly is dangerous as foreign powers getting knowledge of this jet means they can understand all the inner workings. We should remember that USA and UK always sell their jets to selected partners and also limited understanding is there for their military hardware. This is not a smart decision

It is the politicians who do nothing other than corruption and spend all the national wealth on themselves and their families. Latest: now they want blue passports for their spouses and children and of course the travel expenses go with it.

We have to invest a lot in aerodynamics in Pakistan in engineering universities specially government universities because middle class people cannot afford to go to private uni just like GIK, NUST etc

If Pakistan was so advanced to be able to build a fighter jet, than why aren't passenger jets in Pakistan even maintained up-to airworthiness level!? @Skeptic ,You are absolutely wrong,Sheri Lanka tested,bought and started delivering these babies in the summer.Sudan's deal is almost done for these birds, Mushak is favorite as compared to costly training tool and quite a few countries determine to get it as a choice training aircraft.Check it out.

We have a limited capacity to build JF-17 and till 2021 all orders are booked. The orders for 2022 onward are being booked. The real game changer as our lot of money which we used to spend on foreign buying are being saved by a project initiated and undertaken successfully by PAF.

@Haroon about 70% of work force (especially engineering level) are civilians our nuclear, missiles and host of other defence productions are fully operated by civilians. Please do not mix civilians with politicians. It is politicians whom we do not trust as they proved not to be trust worthy

@Chuckle! In the fast changing world Pakistan should try and normalise relations with other countries, even with Israel! Only possible exception will be India with whom we have direct issues. In Myanmar we could help the victimised minority community through friendship and enhancing inter-state stakes including exports and selling military equipment. @Mike,London A joint Pak-China venture. All developing countries, even the Chinese have had external assistance before becoming fully self sufficient. Example is our nuclear programme which despite hurdles has spectacularly progressed so that, according to latest US media, Pakistan. will soon be the World's 3rd nuclear power after America and Russia. Does that satisfy your query ?
