MUZAFFARABAD: Hundreds of people held a rally here on Sunday to condemn India’s effort to seek United Nations sanctions against the leader of Hizbul Mujahideen.

Participants of the procession, organised by the Pasban-i-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, praised China for thwarting the Indian bid and expressed the hope that Beijing would continue to foil conspiracies against the just cause of Kashmir.

India initiated last week a process to seek UN sanctions against Syed Salahuddin, including freezing of his assets and a travel ban, for his alleged association with Al Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

While the Indian Ministry of External Affairs was seeking consent of the UN Security Council to submit a resolution before the world body, China opposed the move.

Speaking at the rally, Uzair Ahmed Ghazali of the Pasban-i-Hurriyat said Kashmiri people were struggling for their inalienable right to self-determination. “India has long been making efforts to link our freedom struggle with terrorism, but to no avail,” he said.

Shaikh Jamilur Rehman and Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi also spoke.
