Kashmiri leader waves Pakistani flag at rally in Srinagar

A Kashmiri leader waved a Pakistani flag at a political gathering in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-held Kashmir.

According to reports in the Indian media, Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam waved the Pakistani flag on Wednesday to greet Syed Ali Shah Geelani at the rally.

Thousands of Kashmiris attended the rally, in the restive capital of state of Indian-held Kashmir, which was held as a show of strength to welcome Geelani on his return from New Delhi.

The Times of India reported that Alam also allegedly chanted pro-Pakistani slogans during the rally.

Alam was released from prison after four years on March 7 this year. Now, questions are being raised on his release and there are widespread reactions on social media platforms, demanding his rearrest.

The 47-year-old Alam, a likely successor to Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, organised Kashmiri youth to welcome Geelani on his return from New Delhi. Alam is known to use social media to spread his views and distribute audio CDs in mosques.

India reacted furiously following the show of support for Pakistan at the Srinagar rally.

National Spokesperson Bharatiya Janata Party GVL Narasimha Rao said the act was completely unacceptable.

“We expect the state government of Jammu and Kashmir, headed by Mufti Saeed, to take cognizance of the matter,” Rao added.

Earlier, Hurriyat leader Asia Andrabi had also hoisted the Pakistani flag at a political gathering in Indian-held Kashmir to mark solidarity with Pakistan on its Republic Day.

Such an interesting conundrum here. For us Kashmir has deliberately dropped out of the news for many a year. Having joined the liberal 'leave Kashmir and focus internally' brigade, was astounded to meet a guy at the world cup in Australia draped head to toe in Pakistani colors, turned out to be a Kashmiri from the Indian occupied side. the stories he had to tell, the atrocities they go through, and the fact that his (and many others') blood still bleeds green and white wiped out the past years of shrugging shoulders. I wish Pakistan gets to a point where we are strong enough to nudge the global community in this direction once again. It wont be a military solution, but somehow, someway, Kashmir Banayga Pakistan...

Group of some people..(in the State of 1 crore and even more population)..doing protest over Indian rule and raising other country's flag do nothing and proves nothing and as personal experience I have visited Kashmir more than 3 time ..And I found nothing .but logically there must not be any type of separatist movement in the state..even it is by less than .1% people of the state

One militant and one civilian, the civilian too a brother of a fugitive militant, get killed and such a huge uproar. Contrast this with hundreds killed elsewhere, no such protests. That shows that these are orchestrated protests, within a democratic society, economically backward but held to Western democratic standards. About the so called protests; these are in favour of independence; the security council 1948 resolutions allow merger with one or the other state; no third solution permitted; and the protesters, why don't they fight elections and prove their electoral worth to the world. Collecting a few people and a favourable media report won't get them what they seek...

Kashmir doesnt belong to only the separatists, it belongs to the other kashmiri citizens and more importantly, to the kashmiri pandits too. So it doesnt matter what a small group of people do, Kashmir will always be a part of India. If those few people love the other side of the border so much i dont think we should be spending our tax money on them and just send them to Pakistan.

Whats big deal ? Lot of people wave Indian or pakistani flags in Australia , London during cricket matches, so can India/Pak raise claim over Austraila or UK territories? This political gathering should not be seen any different from cricket match wherein miniscule number of pakistani supporters are waving flag of the country they support. Lets be mature about this. Majority of Kashmiris have already spoken clear and loud through recently held elections.

In the whole state, and it is big state with three divisions, Jammu, Kashmir valley, and Ladakh, only a section of valley Kashmiri sunni muslims support Pakistan, some want independence, and the rest are o.k. with India. In the rest of state nobody supports Pakistan or independence, this includes all hindus, sikhs, christians, buddhists, gujjar muslims, bakerwal muslims, and most of the shias. Now India being a democratic country people can protest as much as they want as long as they are protesting peacefully. This is not Pakistan where separatists leaders are simply eliminated. Ask yourself, how many Baluch separatists leaders are allowed to live in Pakistan ( alive )?

Well.. There you go. This is exactly why the youth in Kashmir will be penniless, jobless. Rest of India is booming and Pakistan as a state is failing. Any logical person with an elementary degree would know which side to pick. Due to lack of education, these youth can easily be brain washed. India will never give away independence to Kashmir. Not going to happen. If at all, it would have happened in the 90s when the struggle was at it's bloodiest. Now that Modi has planted the BJP flag in J&K, he will slowly choke the movement.

Unemployed & uneducated have a lot of spare time on their hands and are easy to manipulate and rabble-rouse If being Muslim was the criterion for being a state what became of East Pakistan? Why not be one nation with Afghanistan & Iran, Iraq, Syria? And importantly, 200 million Indian Muslim brothers & sisters?

Kashmir issue is complex. Just because there are people on street with Pakistani flags does not mean that entire set of Kashmiri muslims want to go with Pakistan. There are differing opinions in the valley (including pro-india). Sure, there are a handful of individuals (some independent thinkers, some affected by army occupation and ALSO some supported by outside or driven by their own Profit motives) that incite such incidents. If people in Azad Kashmir or Balochistan start raising Indian flags - they will be tried for treason immediately. But not in Indian side of Kasmir. This I hope sheds some light on the "supposed" brutality and "restricted independence" of people there.

Do you really think that it is not difficult to make India do the same for Pakistan in Pakistan ? Don't you think it is enough blood shed already in Pakistan ? It is not India that needs to wake up, it is Pakistan. People's aspirations my foot, it directly conflicts with democracy principles. You just cannot aspire to part away from democracy, this is not people's aspirations. It is extremely foolish. If you want to aspire something, you will need to do it within the permissible constitutional manner. Well, who can understand this in Kashmir or many in Pakistan :)

I'm surprised Dawn is reporting this news. Waving Pakistan flags in occupied Kashmir - especially in Sri Nagar and all of the valley - is a very regular and normal occurance. Many Kashmiris keep Pakistani flag in their homes. It's a sign of solidarity with their fellow Pakistanis and a symbol of defiance against the brutal indian occupation which has seen the killing of 92,000 Kashmiri civilians since 1989 alone! Pakistan will continue to provide moral and material support to Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC, unabated.

If you have ever been to Kashmir this shouldn't be any surprise. 14 th August is celebrated through out the Srinagar valley except governor house whereas 15 August is celebrated only in governor house and valley comes to a stand still!!!

Only about 700-800 people turned up for this in a state of 1.2 crore population. But 30000 youth turned up recently for Indian Army recruitement drive and 68% of the population participated in State elections in December. These facts are enough to open the eyes of some day dreamers across the border.

Kashmir is clearly the part of pakistan. The only reason pakistan doesn't have this today is the soft stance towards india and allegiance to the international laws. India stole it by fake annexation document.... I believe, the war is imminent on this issue..... Its better for india to join the negotiation table and decide the fate of kashmir with pakistan.

@Zak it was india who asked UN to plebiscite. first condition in UN charter is that pakistan should move out its forces from Pakistani occupation. Then India will move its forces, then plebiscite. But after SHimla agreement, UN doesnt count , as it was your prime minister bhutto ,not osama bin laden ,who signed the agreement in1972 that matters will be resolved bilaterally between two countries.

I was positive that Indians would resort to word play and statistics to make this very significant event look unimportant. I am not disappointed at all. Kashmir people actually waved Pakistani flag and FIR has been lodged under "Treason" for the people who did so. India really needs to wake up from it's day dream that the people of Kashmir love India . We are all for dialogue on Kashmir dispute but no dialogue is acceptable without Kashmir leaders being part of it !

Good show by Geelani sahab, getting all of his 5000 supporters on the road. Unfortunately it will not matter to us. Kashmir is a Hindu territory since thousands of years. It is the a part of the so called Kashmiris who now claim to be locals but are actually migrants into Kashmir and have indulged in a demography altering genocide. Sorry you will get nothing from us. Kashmir belongs to us. Only option for such elements is to either live in India and accept the reality or leave for Pakistan. :)

@Nadeem Pakistan has invalidated UN resolutions in 1971. UN resolutions have expired. Pakistan should quit West Kashmir (the so called Ajad Kashmir) and north Kashmir (the so called Northern Areas) and behave like a civilized nation. Both these areas belong to India. Pakistan must quit all parts of Kashmir it is illegally occupying.

If I was a policy maker, I would have given this solution to K problem.. 1) Take out Hindu domunitated Jammu and Budhist dominated Laddakh 2) Let Kashmir go whereever they want. 3) Remove Article 370.

@Strangefact Are they all just your brothers? Not brothers to 200 million Indian Muslim, middle eastern, north African & ex East Pakistan Muslims? Emotive statements are all very well but it does not suddenly solve the problem. Ask yourself what would you do with all the extra people who have low productivity and work ethic. We Pakistanis are impoverished as it is, lacking in heath care, education, economic well being, infrastructure, etc. Adding more people of similar sort with little ability and talent will only impoverish us more and cause large scale discontent. I say let Kashmir & Kashmiris be. Don't get carried away by a few of them waving Pakistani flags. It doesn't mean anything other than expressing personal discontent and revenge against a regime that imprisioned this man or 4 years. We have enough problems of our own to solve. So cool it. Be pragmatic.

Not only Kashmiris most Muslim all over India have a soft corner for Pakistan. A few raise Pakistan flags and Pakistan sindabad when Pakistan play cricket,mostly I have seen it in muslim dominated areas.(this very True). India is the second largest muslim populated country after Indonasia.after 100 years india will be a muslim majority state. dear fellow Pakistani brothers kindly wait for 100 years to form a very big Islamic republic with whole india Kashmir and Pakistan.till then don't send any gori missile ...

@Zak Plebiscite for Kashmir, is for including the parts with Pakistan's Azad kasmir and parths that occupied by China. Chances are that all three parts of Kashmir will form a new separate nation "Kashmir" as well . So when is Pakistan and China daring to do the UN plebiscite.
