PESHAWAR: The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) on Friday defused a bomb planted under a vehicle parked near Khyber Teaching Hospital University Town foiling a terrorist attack in the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials present at the site of the incident told that the explosive material was enclosed in a shopping bag and was fixed under a Land Cruiser which was later defused by using water charges.

Superintendent of Police Peshawar Cantt Faisal Kamran told media that BDS defused the explosive material which was planted with the silencer of the vehicle.

He added that about 500 grams of explosives was used in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which could have proved fatal if it would have exploded in a populated area.

The owner of the vehicle Babar Imran told that he had gone to the Khyber Teaching Hospital to get his mother examined by a doctor. When he came out of the hospital, he saw a shopping bag planted under his car and immediately informed the Bomb Disposal Squad.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lies on the edge of Pakistan's tribal areas which have been labelled by Washington as the main sanctuary for Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in the country.

The city has seen frequent attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to policemen and other law enforcement personnel.
