LAHORE: An election tribunal on Wednesday annulled result of PP-136, Narowal, and ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct re-poll in the constituency.
PML-N's Shujaat Ahmed Khan, a retired colonel, was elected to the Punjab Assembly in the May 11 general elections.
An independent candidate, Mohammad Wakeel Khan Manj, challenged the victory of Mr Khan.
The petitioner accused the PML-N candidate of committing rigging on the day of polling and sought inspection of the election record. The tribunal appointed a commission for the inspection of the record.
The commission in its report revealed grave irregularities in the election record. It also reported that most of the election record was missing and not available with the District Treasury that put a big question mark on the result.
The report revealed that ballot papers of the constituency at many polling stations were not available in the election bags. Moreover, counterfoils of at least five polling stations were without stamp and signature of the issuing officer, it said.
Relying on the commission's report, the tribunal declared the election result of PP-136 null and void. It ordered the ECP to hold fresh polling in the constituency.
