SWABI, March 12: The NWFP governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, said on Tuesday that the 12MW power produced by the Pehur Hydro-Power Project would be given to the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate.
This he stated at a briefing given to him about the PHPP which is the supplementary component of the Pehure High Level Canal Project, to be located at the downstream end of the Gandaf tunnel which is specifically designed for the hydro power generation.
He said that it was estimated that the project can be constructed in 21 months but after the awarding of the contract, additional nine months required for the preparation of detail design, cost estimates and tender documents.
However, the governor told the officials of Sarhad Hydel Development Organization that it should be completed as early as possible.
The governor was informed that after the completion of the project cheap power would be available to the Gadoon industrialists which would encourage them to a great extent. Besides, the local peasants will be able to put their arid land under cultivation through installation of tubewells in the area.
The officials told the governor that three turbines, each one producing 6 MW power would be installed for electricity generation but only two turbines would go under operation at a time.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs753.06 million and it would be completed in 30 months. During the briefing Mr Shah was also told that the Pehur Project would be completed till the end of the current year, about one and a half year behind of the original completion date. Its original cost was estimated Rs459.9 million but now it jumped to Rs646.6 million.
The governor was also briefed about the under construction activities and work carried out by the prime construction company STFA and sub-contractors, claiming that the project would be completed before the revised completion date.
Earlier talking to the union councils Nazimeen the governor urged upon the federal government to improve the Wapda services because in some areas of frontier the power remained suspended for 18 hours which created a lot of problems for the people. In case of Wapda’s failure to give positive response, the people may be forced to protest against the unlimited loadshedding, he added.
He said the Wapda has been working under the federal overnment umbrella and the federal authorities should take steps for the controlling of frequent breakdowns.
About the improvement in standard of education and imparting of modern education to the youngsters, he said that seven universities and 17 colleges have been established by the provincial government and for boosting standard of education the private sectors had also been encouraged.
He said, the government has imposed a ban on the private practice of doctors and the institution- based private practice has been regularized to provide best health services to the people.
The doctors and other staff of hospitals had remained in league to loot the people but now their tactics would no longer work as the government has regularized private practice and modern health care instruments were installed in the hospitals, he said, adding that the government would continue its efforts for the provision of facilities in all fields.
About Swabi he said that the Yarhussain bridge, Kalukhan Naddi bridge, provision of tubewells to peasants, construction of Gadoon Estate and Swabi bypass roads and sanction of two million grant for girls college in Karnal Sher Killi had been provided by the frontier government.
