ISLAMABAD: The executive vice president of technology giant Siemens on Saturday expressed the company’s readiness to enhance its support for strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure during a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari in Berlin.

The president was on a three-day visit to Germany as the two countries prepare to mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Siemens Executive Vice President Daniel Frisch briefed the president on his company’s achievements in Pakistan. He also acknowledged improvements in health services, attributing them to the Sindh health department’s “rationally networked steps”.

Mr Frisch “expressed his readiness and desire to enhance existing support through innovative solutions and technological applications for strengthening existing healthcare infrastructure of Pakistan”, the statement said.

The Siemens delegation informed the president that its representatives would soon visit Pakistan to sign MoUs with local partners in capacity building and healthcare technology.

The company’s technological cooperation in Pakistan extends to cancer, stroke and other diseases, the delegation said.

‘Quality healthcare’

President Zardari called for the adoption of research-based and technology-driven solutions to improve healthcare services in the country.

He said Pakistan highly valued German industrial, technological and infrastructural support from organisations such as Siemens’ healthcare division, which has been operating in Pakistan for decades and employs more than 100 people in three major cities.

The president said the “long-awaited mutual desire of expanded and augmented bilateral partnership” between Islamabad and Berlin had been reaffirmed during his meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday.

“Affordable, yet qualified and highly standardised health service delivery, stays fundamental to enable each and every citizen to realise unhindered potential,” Mr Zardari was quoted as saying.

“We strive for broadened and all-inclusive provision of quality healthcare, particularly for poverty-stricken people in remote areas,” he added.

The president encouraged Siemens to deepen its engagement with Pakistan and diversify its investments across multiple sectors. He also assured the company’s senior executives of “the fullest institutional cooperation” through the Special Investment Facilitation Council.

Later, President Zardari was seen off at Berlin airport as he departed Germany to return home.
