SWABI, March 12: The NWFP governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, said on Tuesday that the 12MW power produced by the Pehur Hydro-Power Project would be given to the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate.

This he stated at a briefing given to him about the PHPP which is the supplementary component of the Pehure High Level Canal Project, to be located at the downstream end of the Gandaf tunnel which is specifically designed for the hydro power generation.

He said that it was estimated that the project can be constructed in 21 months but after the awarding of the contract, additional nine months required for the preparation of detail design, cost estimates and tender documents.

However, the governor told the officials of Sarhad Hydel Development Organization that it should be completed as early as possible.

The governor was informed that after the completion of the project cheap power would be available to the Gadoon industrialists which would encourage them to a great extent. Besides, the local peasants will be able to put their arid land under cultivation through installation of tubewells in the area.

The officials told the governor that three turbines, each one producing 6 MW power would be installed for electricity generation but only two turbines would go under operation at a time.

The total estimated cost of the project is Rs753.06 million and it would be completed in 30 months. During the briefing Mr Shah was also told that the Pehur Project would be completed till the end of the current year, about one and a half year behind of the original completion date. Its original cost was estimated Rs459.9 million but now it jumped to Rs646.6 million.

In case of Wapda’s failure to give positive response, the people may be forced to protest against the unlimited loadshedding, he added.

He said the Wapda has been working under the federal overnment umbrella and the federal authorities should take steps for the controlling of frequent breakdowns.
