With its unique appearance and glossy lobed leaves, the Philodendron Florida is one of the most sought-after ornamental houseplants. A relatively recent cross of Philodendron squamiferum and Philodendron pedatum, the plant’s leaves can be solid green or have multiple colours in a single leaf, depending on the cultivar.
Commonly available cultivars include those with the suffixes Beauty, Bronze, Ghost and Green, referring primarily to the colour of their leaves and, in some cases, their patterns. Apart from the colour, it can be difficult to differentiate between varieties of Philodendron as they have overlapping characteristics.
The plant can be grown both indoors and outdoors, but doing so successfully requires adherence to a few basic gardening guidelines. Beyond location, how the plant is propagated also matters.
Because Philodendron Florida is a hybrid, growing it from seed will not reliably produce a plant identical to the parent. Vegetative propagation, such as stem cuttings or tissue culture, is therefore preferred when the aim is to preserve the characteristics of a particular cultivar. Therefore, the easiest way to obtain a particular variety of Philodendron Florida is to purchase an established plant from a reputable seller. The advantage is that the variety is already established and identifiable.

For those who want to grow their own plant, the best way forward is propagation. Take a healthy stem cutting of the selected Philodendron Florida. Beginners should ensure that the cutting is at least six inches, has at least two leaves, two nodes (the point on the stem where the leaf is attached) and one internode (the space on the stem between the two nodes). Place the lower portion of the cutting in water, ensuring that at least one node is submerged. Roots may develop within a few weeks. Once they do, transfer the cutting into the potting medium within a container.
The Philodendron Florida should not be planted in ordinary garden soil because it can become compacted and restrict drainage and aeration. Instead, the ideal potting mix for the plant is an aroid soil mix. This potting mix is chunky, which lets air circulate around the roots and water drain quickly. An aroid mix generally contains coco coir, perlite and orchid bark and it is widely available at plant nurseries and garden stores. At the time of writing, a one-kilogramme bag of aroid mix costs between Rs500 and Rs700.
The plant should be placed in indirect light. Watering should be done only when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. The potting medium should drain quickly; otherwise, excess moisture can lead to root-rot. The frequency of watering should be adjusted during the rainy season and winter.
One of the characteristic features of the Philodendron Florida is that it also has aerial roots, which appear as the plant matures. Unlike roots that grow underground, aerial roots emerge along the stem, visible as light-brown outgrowths. These roots help the plant climb and can also absorb moisture and nutrients from the environment.
The Philodendron Florida seldom flowers. The reddish-green or cream spathe — a modified bract that surrounds the flower — appears mainly on mature outdoor plants and encases the tiny flowers within. It may bloom only once every few years, lasting just a day or two.
If grown properly and in optimal conditions, the Philodendron Florida plant can even outlive its grower. It has been anecdotally reported that the plant can live for decades and may even live for more than a century in ideal conditions.
