India tests two surface-to-air missiles
BHUBANESHWAR (India), Jan 28: India carried out two successful tests on Saturday of its surface-to-air Akash missile at an eastern coastal testing range, a defence official said.
The missiles were fired from the Chandipur-on-sea testing site, 200 kilometres northeast of Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar, the defence official said.
The missiles were test-fired from rocket launchers and hit their flying targets successfully, the official said.
The 700-kilogramme Akash can track 100 targets simultaneously with onboard radar, move at 600 metres a second and deliver a 55-kilogram warhead across 27 kilometres in 50 seconds.
The missile is one of five being developed by India’s state-run Defence Research and Development Organization.—AFP
