SIALKOT, April 25: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will soon launch a comprehensive development project in the Narowal district.

According to a press release issued here on Friday, the ADB delegation announced the decision during its meeting with the Narowal district Nazim.

The district Nazim told the ADB delegation that Narowal was a backward area where the per capita income of the people was very low.

He said the water shortage was adding to the difficulties of farmers. He urged the ADB delegation that farmers should be provided soft-term loans for the purchase of agriculture equipment.

Narowal DCO Muhammad Ilyas and other higher officials concerned were also present on the occasion.

COLLEGE COUNCILS: Sialkot District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid has directed the Education department to establish ‘College Councils’ in all male and female colleges for initiating uplift schemes through the proper use of College Welfare Funds.

Speaking at a meeting here on Friday, the District Nazim said that these ‘College Councils’ would comprise professors of colleges, local philanthropists and old students.

He also directed all the principals of colleges to recruit lecturers on vacant posts on temporary basis for overcoming the problem of lecturers’ shortage. These lecturers would be paid from the College Welfare Funds, he said.

Sialkot DCO Capt Zahid Saeed (retired), the District Education Officer and principals of all colleges were also present in the meeting.

Principals of colleges told the meeting that they had always been hesitant in utilizing the College Welfare Funds just to avoid the objections of the audit.

Earlier, speaking at the annual prize distribution ceremony of Government Elementary School, Kandan Sayan (Daska), the district Nazim said the district government was spending maximum of its annual budget on the promotion of education sector.

He said the district government had allocated Rs170 million for the construction of additional classrooms, boundary walls and lavatories in Sialkot district’s 235 boys and girls schools during the last financial year.

He said 15 additional classrooms would soon be constructed in Government College for Women (Daska) while M.A classes would also be started in the college shortly. Besides, he said two hostels were also being built at Government College for Women (Sialkot) and Government Allama Iqbal College for Women (Sialkot) at a cost of Rs40 million.

The Sialkot EDO (Education) said the district government had provided furniture worth Rs6.5 million to district’s various schools, besides upgrading 21 schools.
