KARACHI, June 8 The prevailing law and order situation in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, came under discussion at a meeting chaired by Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza at the Central Police Office here on Monday.

The meeting discussed the ongoing wave of lawlessness and targeted killing of citizens and political workers.

The home minister directed the police to take all-out measures to arrest those involved in the killings. He said the intelligence system should be made more effective and steps should be taken for the identification and arrest of absconders involved in serious crimes.

Referring to a report that the incident of targeted killings occurred in the limits of 16 police stations situated in 10 towns of the metropolis, he directed the police and Rangers to intensify their patrolling in the jurisdiction of these police stations.

He said that by carrying out targeted killings, mischievous political elements wanted to weaken the democratic forces and disturb the relations between coalition parties.

He stressed the need for a timely action against what he called such anti-state, anti-democracy forces and anti-social elements.

Dr Mirza directed the authorities concerned to furnish the details of incidents of targeted killings of political workers and citizens during the last one year.

He promised that he would take stern action if he found any negligence on the part of the police. He directed the authorities of the CID and the Special Branch to keep a watchful eye on the activities of suspects. The two wings of the police were also asked to keep an eye on the activities of those involved in incidents of car theft and other crimes.

Among others, the inspector-general of police, the home secretary, the director-general of the Rangers, the city police chief and senior police officers were present in the meeting.—APP
