Published August 12, 2010

MULTAN, Aug 11 District Coordination Officer Muhammad Khurram Agha said on Wednesday a flow of 250,000 cusecs of water was passing through the district and it would increase up to 300,000 cusecs by Thursday (today). However, there is no danger of flood in Multan.

He denied the reports that about 900,000 cusecs of water had passed through the district in the past. He said the situation would become serious if the flow went beyond 600,000 cusecs in Chenab but the citizens of Multan would be informed in time.

He said the district administration was keeping an eye on the flood situation. He was of the view that the water level in Chenab would start receding from Aug 13.

Chief Engineer Irrigation Iftikhar Dogar said a flow of 350,000 cusec from Head Trimmu would pass through the district.

EDO Community Javed Mahmood Bhatti said the district administration has increased the number of flood relief camps from 19 to 22 and 5,645 people were getting shelter in these camps.

RELIEF State Minister for Law Mehreen Anwar Raja said that in the first phase about 100 trucks of food items would be distributed among the flood victims of Dera Ghazi Khan division.

She stated this after distributing packets of food among the victims at Karor Lal Esan in Layyah on Wednesday. She said the rehabilitation of the victims was the first priority of the government and development funds would be cut if needed.

She said President Asif Ali Zardi had assigned her the task to shift the relief goods for the victims of Layyah. To avoid wastage of water, she said, new dams would be constructed with consensus. Around 7,000 megawatts electricity would be generated only with the construction of Bunji Dam, she added.
