KARACHI Pakistan were thrashed 3-0 by Iran in the opening match of the Asian Central Zone Volleyball Championship in Kolkata on Friday.

Iran were able to wrap up the win in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21 as Pakistan struggled to make an impact in the match.

Pakistan's participation in the tournament was in doubt until Tuesday, when they received last-minute visa clearance from India.

The four-nation tournament, which also includes Kazakhstan and hosts India, is being played in Kolkata from September 16 to 20.

Pakistan will play Kazakhstan in their second match on Saturday, who will meet hosts India in Friday's evening match.

The Pakistan squad is being led by captain Zaheer Abbas.
