HARIPUR, April 4: A student of 5th grade, who has attempted self-immolation after repeatedly punished by his teachers, died in village Kamilpur, Hattar on Thursday.

The victim had received 65 per cent burns and was shifted to Rawalpindi General Hospital on February 9, from where the doctors discharged him three days ago.

Mohammad Amir, 11, a student of grade 5 in the government primary school in Kamilpur, in his statement to the Hattar police under section 161 from the hospital bed, had stated the muffler of his class teacher Mohammad Waseem was lost some time back.

As the teacher suspected him of stealing the muffler, he and another teacher, Saeed Akhtar, punished him for three days consecutively.

They also threatened to strip him publicly if he did not return the muffler the next day, he had told the investigation officer.

The victim told the police that despite the fact that he had disclosed the name of the student who had stolen the muffler, they kept beating him severely.

On February 7, according to the victim’s statement, he after undergoing several rounds of corporal punishment went out of the school and attempted self-immolation.

He was rescued by the people and removed him to Civil Hospital Kot Najibullah, but was later shifted to Rawalpindi General Hospital, from where he was discharged on March 31.

According to the family sources, Amir died in the wee hours of Thursday.

He was buried in his ancestral graveyard in village Kamilpur.
