Published December 4, 2001

PESHAWAR, Dec 3: On the directives of National Accountability Bureau, an assistant director of Primary Education Project, Dir, Shehryar Khan, was arrested on Monday.

He was produced before an accountability court which remanded him in the custody of Regional Accountability Bureau for 12 days.

Three days ago, the RAB had arrested five other officials of Public Works Department, including three executive engineers, for alleged embezzlement in the World Bank-funded Primary Education Project in Dir.

On their part, they were allegedly found instrumental in submitting bogus bills to Primary Education Project for non-executed works whereby an amount of Rs156.181 million was illegally transferred from PEP to accounts of the then Communication and Works Department.

It is alleged that in the process, the other accused persons derived pecuniary gains at the cost of the project.
