Chitral PPP infighting

Published May 29, 2009

THIS is apropos of the news report (May 24) regarding a scuffle between two groups of the Pakistan People's Party, Chitral wing. The fight erupted at a meeting where the two groups thrashed each other, including its sitting president. The very next day the scuffle took an ugly turn when the rivals started fighting on the streets.

The workers of the PPP are not satisfied with the performance of its Chitral president and have alleged a countless number of times that he was responsible for 'fixing the election' as a result of which they did not have a majority vote in the district and had lost the National Assembly seat. They are against the 'dictatorship' of the sitting district president.

It has brought a bad name to the PPP which is in power. The PPP is a democratic party which is against dictatorship. Chitral is regarded as the 'second Larkana' because of getting a majority of PPP votes. Begum Nusrat Bhutto had contested the election from Chitral in 1988 and had won it.

I would like to request President Asif Ali Zardari to immediately change the current PPP leadership of Chitral district and save the PPP seat for the next general election. It is time a chance was given to the young leadership, especially the sitting PPP nazims of Chitral, like Muhammad Wazir Khan, who would be acceptable to the people of Chitral.
