SUKKUR March 13: A policeman, Maula Bakhsh Brohi, and three passersby were killed on Thursday in an encounter between the Garhi Yasin police and a group of bandits in the Nooro Shar village, Shikarpur district.

The police officials said that the encounter ensued after the police force rushed to intercept the gang of Zari Shar and Annu Shar, who were reported to have reached Nooro Shar village along with eight of their accomplices.

Three others, later identified as Mohammed Anwar Arbani, Shahid Hussain Pathan and Nisar Ahmed, were also killed in the shootout.

The bandits managed to break out of the police cordon to head towards the Kutcha area. The police claimed to be pursuing them.

An unspecified number of injured were later shifted to the taluka hospital in Garhi Yaseen.

The DPO, Shikarpur, Abdul Khaliq Shaikh, said that the three persons, who were killed in the encounter were heroin addicts, and had accidentally become victims of the cross-firing.

KILLED: A motorcycle rider, Khair Mohammad, was killed and his wife, whose name could not be ascertained, was injured critically on Thursday after being hit by an upcountry- bound bus near the Daharki by-pass.

The bus (P-5440) had originated from Karachi.

The injured woman has been shifted to the taluka hospital.

The driver of the bus managed to escape after abandoning the vehicle.

A case was registered by the Daharki police and the bus was impounded.

CONVOCATION: The 2003 convocation of the Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, will be held on March 26.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad will preside over the convocation.
