Defence of Musharraf

Published August 21, 2009

Regarding the recent mood of some sections of society of labelling former president Pervez Musharraf as a traitor, I beg you to consider what the ex-president has done for the country.

I can in no way defend his actions regarding the placing of emergency rule on Nov 3, 2007, the PCO or even the NRO, for they irk me the same way they irk thousands of other Pakistani citizens.

However, before labeling him as traitor we must acknowledge that it is the same man who saved Pakistan which was on the brink of bankruptcy eight years ago, leading it towards the path of economic progress and freeing the media. A true honest leader, whatever he may be blamed for, can never be blamed for either corruption or lack of patriotism.
