DOWRY is an evil that puts an extra burden on girls' parents in Pakistan. If parents are not in a position to spend a substantial amount on the dowry of their daughter, they are likely to get no proposal for her.
Marriage seems to have become a business wherein a boy's family makes demands for many things such as flat, car, jewellery, airconditioner and other luxurious items.
Thousands of girls remain unmarried because their parents cannot afford to arrange for their dowry.
The mass media, civil society and religious scholars should create awareness against dowry. Besides, the government should take some steps to end this evil.
