KARACHI, March 5: Labour leaders have been assured that their views and suggestions regarding IRO 2002 would be communicated to the federal government.

The assurance was given by the director of the labour directorate, Gul Mohammed Rind, to office-bearers of various federations representing labours during a meeting at his office on Tuesday.

The meeting, presided over by Mr Rind, was called to discuss the problems being faced by working class in the province.

Mr Rind, who had recently assumed the office, told the meeting of the measures he had taken to revamp the working of the directorate including strengthening the conciliatory machinery and streamlining the working of trade unions’ branch.

The director stressed the need for regular consultations with the workers’ representatives to bring further improvement.

Earlier, speaking on behalf of the trade union action committee (TUAC), comprising 15 labour federations, SP Lodhi said that industrial workers and the community were criticizing the IRO 2002 and had demanded its immediate withdrawal.

“Any decision regarding labour legislation without the participation of the TUAC would not be acceptable to the workers of Sindh,” he added.

Saleem Raza suggested improvement in the working of inspection wing of the directorate to make it result oriented.

M. Sharif called for ensuring judiciary free of all pressures while Habibuddin Junedi demanded that all amendments made in the Banking Companies Ordinance should be repealed forthwith.
