SUKKUR: Landlord saves woman’s life

Published February 17, 2003

SUKKUR, Feb 16: The life of a woman, Ms Magi, was saved on Sunday after a local landlord, Irshad Gulato, intervened when her husband, Yaseen, tried to kill her over the pretext of Karo-kari in Garhi Khairo.

Police later arrested the infuriated husband.

Sardar Taj Mohammad Domki told Dawn that the husband, Yaseen, allegedly opened fire on his wife, Ms Magi, when she refused to hand him over 40 acres of agricultural land.

He said that the woman narrowly escaped death and ran towards the house of Irshad Gulato, a local landlord, who protected her from the wrath of her infuriated husband and saved her life.

Meanwhile, this correspondent learnt that the arrested man, Yasin, had told the police that his wife was allegedly involved with another person, adding that he wanted to kill her to protect his honour.

Mr Domki also confirmed the woman’s contention that her husband wanted to kill her to grab the agricultural lands in her name. Stressing on the need for law for the police to register all such cases under section 302 of the CrPC and not Karo-kari, Mr Domki called upon the government to authorize well-to-do landlords to conduct a thorough inquiry into such cases before registering a Karo-kari case.
