KARACHI, Feb 6: To improve productivity and make life more enjoyable, one needs to adopt a balanced way of life, for which one needs to be healthy , well-fed and filled with required emotions of love.

This was said by Mahmood Mirza, an EQ (emotional quotient) consultant. He was speaking at a workshop, EQ: the critical factor in success, organized for journalists on Thursday by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF).

Director PPF Samina Ishaq, speaking on the occasion, said that corporate leaders, outstanding entrepreneurs and executives were not defined by their IQ or job skills, but by their emotional intelligence.

She added that emotional intelligence is the ability to sense, understand and effectively apply the power and good judgement of emotions as a source of human energy and influence.

Mahmood Mirza said that emotions attached with childhood affect the personality of adults.

He said: “People become stubborn mainly due to the feeling of being threatened in their world of perception, each individual has a different perception of reality.

The brain cannot differentiate between fact and fiction, it is the feedback information supplied by neurons, coupled with adapted habits and the environment in which the child is growing, that develops the beliefs of a person.

Nothing can be achieved in life without the power of belief. According to international research, four sprits are needed to make better a human, namely the physical, the emotional, the spiritual and intellectual.”

Dr Mahmood further said that every individual had a personality right that could be called the “ME”’ of that person, and a balanced approach between “ME’ and the others around needed to be developed by the individual.

He regretted that societies imparted contradictory education to children that usually resulted in dual personalities when they grew up. He said in the developed countries training and courses were being conducted for young couples for better parenting. He added that most emotional and personality problems originated at homes and could

explode like the Pandora’s box any time in life.

Suggesting steps for self-therapy he said: “The important emotional factor of anybody is their threshold of pain that differs in all individuals. This threshold can be improved.

One must identify the problems and causes of discord with others , after which proper documentation is needed. One must look at the progress after the scheduled timeframe and analyze the progress.

One must look toward positive role-models rather than giving examples of those who have left negative impacts on the society.”—PPI
