LARKANA, Feb 3: The district council, at its Monday’s session, resented helplessness of sub-committees, formed to get implemented the council’s resolutions, pertaining to different government departments.

Tabling the resolution, Amir Bukhsh Gaad alleged that under a well-calculated move, the district governments in Sindh, particularly that of Larkana, were being paralyzed.

The chairman of the district council’s education sub-committee pointed out that mass-scale transfers and postings of lower grade officers, by bypassing the eligible officers, had become a common practice in education department of the district.

He alleged that the EDO, education, had destroyed education in the district to the extent that, according to him, 700 schools were lying closed in the area.

Participating in the debate, Barkat Shaikh and Hayat Shaikh deplored that almost all the resolutions, which were unanimously adopted by the district council, remained unimplemented by the concerned quarters.

It was to better resign, they said, than wasting time in passing such resolutions.

A majority of the members supported the resolution.

The convener, failing to restore order, adjourned the session till Tuesday.

Protests: A series of prot ests was held outside the council hall when the Larkana district council was in session on Monday.

The residents of Shah Murad Abro village, held a demonstration to demand the arrest of the absconding SHO of Rasheed Waggan police, Abdul Majeed Brohi, allegedly involved in killing a villager, Qurban Jat.

The retired employees of the Larkana Municipal Corporation observed a token hunger strike against the municipal management, accusing it of delaying payment of their pensions.

The Hotel Labour Union workers also observed a token hunger strike to press the government for fair allotment of residential quarters in the newly constructed Labour Colony.

They alleged that the secretary of the Workers’ Welfare Board and local labour leaders were excluding the applications of hotel workers from the list of the would-be recipients of the quarters.

Moreover, a group of special persons on wheel chairs held a demonstration outside the district council hall.

They called for approval of a special package to enable them to begin businesses.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation workers, led by their leader, Zulfikar Sangi, held a demonstration against the proposed privatization of the organization. They assembled outside the district council hall after marching on main roads of the city.
