KARACHI: An assistant sub-inspector was gunned down and two other police officials were wounded in separate incidents of firing in Orangi, North Nazimabad and Surjani Towns on Monday, officials said.

ASI Syed Murtaza Hussain Rizvi, 45, was killed apparently in a sectarian attack in Orangi Town, the police said.

They added that the incident took place in Feroz Shah Colony, Sector 11½ of Orangi Town where armed me fired shots at ASI Rizvi.

‘He was heading to a nearby Imambargah from the Pakistan Bazaar police station, where he was posted as Head Mohrar, to offer prayers when he was targeted,” said SSP District West Asif Ajaz Shaikh while speaking to Dawn.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died before being taken to hospital. The police later shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

The senior officer said the police investigators believed that the killing was carried out purely on sectarian grounds. However, the number of assailants and mode of transport used in the shooting was not clear, he added.

Recently the slain officer had been promoted to the rank of ASI from Head Constable. He was inducted in the police force in late 80s. The victim was father of three and resided in the police quarters located adjacent to the Pakistan Bazaar police station.

Following the killing, tension gripped the locality.

After a post-mortem examination, the body was taken to the Masjid-i-Khairul Amal, Incholi, where funeral prayers were offered in the evening.

The police later conducted a targeted operation in Feroz Shah Colony and adjacent localities and detained several suspects.

ASI wounded Another ASI was shot at and wounded in a drive-by shooting in North Nazimabad, police said.

The police added that the incident took place in Block-A where armed men riding a motorcycle fired at Rais Ali, 30, and sped away.

The victim was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment, the officials said.

Traffic police official attacked In yet another attack, a traffic police constable Ghulam Mustafa was wounded at Power House Chowrangi in Surjani Town, officials said.

They added that the victim was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

Man found shot dead A young man was found shot dead near Pehalwan Goth, police said.

They added that the body found from bushes bore torture marks and gunshot wounds.

The police shifted the body to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.

They suspected that the body was dumped at the scene before being killed somewhere else.

Following the legal formalities, the body was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.
