KARACHI, Jan 24: An alleged bandit was shot dead in Gulshan-i- Iqbal on Friday, in what police claimed an encounter.

A woman came out of a money changer’s shop on University Road in block-16. As she was walking two suspects began following her. Monitoring the suspects’ activities policemen followed them and asked them to stop. Instead, one of the suspects took out a pistol and opened fire at one of the policemen who narrowly escaped. Taking advantage of the situation the suspects crossed the main road and went towards Mumtaz Manzil.

Policemen chased them on their motorcycles and an exchange of fire between police and the suspects took place in which one of the suspects was shot dead, police said. He was identified as Noor Khan, aged 35, hailing from Peshawar.

His accomplice escaped.

Police claimed to have recovered a pistol from the possession of the dead suspect.

The body was sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for post-mortem.

Police said due to rising incidents of robbery two policemen were deployed in the area.

Earlier in the week, a woman was robbed of Rs9,000 by two armed men riding a motorcycle. She also was robbed when she came out from a money changer’s shop in the same area.
