ISLAMABAD, Feb 20: The PPP leadership met at the Presidency on Wednesday to discuss issues concerning general elections.

Sources told Dawn that the caretaker set-up, possible dates for elections and the issue of creation of the Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab province were main items on the agenda of the meeting presided over by PPP Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari and attended by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.

The meeting discussed the possible fallout of the government’s move to present the constitution amendment bill seeking creation of the new province in the Senate during its ongoing session. The Senate Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has already passed the bill.

It was perhaps because of the court’s restrictions on Mr Zardari to carry out political activities in the Presidency that the officials, when contacted, said that no formal meeting had taken place there and the president had hosted a dinner for members of the federal cabinet.
