KARACHI, Feb 11: A young Indian fisherman arrested for fishing inside Pakistani territorial waters a couple of weeks back, escaped from Malir district jail on Monday.
Jail Superintendent Nazeer Shah said that the fisherman, Kishwar son of Bhagwandas, managed to slip out of the jail while cleaning the main gate of the detention facility.
He said that he was brought to the prison on Jan 29.
The jailer said that two prison officials were suspended for dereliction of duty that resulted in the escape of the foreigner fisherman.
Normally, all Indian fishermen are confined at the Malir district prison following their arrest by the Maritime Security Agency for fishing illegally in Pakistani waters.Retired Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, who heads the non-governmental organisation Legal Aid Office, told Dawn that it was unheard-of for an Indian fisherman to escape from prison here.
