LARKANA, Jan 18: Speakers at a seminar on “Advocacy on Eradication of Polio”, organized here on Saturday, expressed concern over the finding of nine polio case in the district.

They said three more cases were under-investigation.

Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Expanded Programme of Immunization project director Dr Shamsunissa Anasri said efforts should be made to eliminate polio in the country.

Fixing March 31 as the deadline to eradicate polio in the province, the director general, Sindh health, Dr Abdul Qadir Memon, said the staff engaged in the anti-polio campaign should make sure to vaccinate all children up to five years of age against polio.

He urged Nazims and local police officials to keep an eye over the performance of health teams.

Unicef representative Dr Asif Aslam said there were one per cent cases of polio in Pakistan, adding that out of 39 cases, 13 were found in Sindh.

District Nazim Khursheed Junejo, who presided over the seminar, stressed the need for making a linkage between paramedics and the people to make the special anti-polio campaign, scheduled to be launched from Jan 28 to 30 in selected districts of Sindh, successful.

The SHOs have been asked to immediately report at the police headquarters.

ANTI-POLICE PROTEST: The villagers of the Shahmurad Abro village protested against the police outside the office of the district officer on Friday for seriously injuring a villager, Qurban Jat, late Thursday night.

A police party on late Thursday night raided the house of Qurban Jat in connection with the recovery of some money on the complaint of one Mehar Jat. The situation grew tense when the police started dragging Qurban. Police opened fire and one of the bullets hit Qurban in the forehead.

He was admitted in the Chandka Medical College Teaching Hospital in serious condition.

The villagers started protesting against the police outside the office of the district officer on Friday. They raised slogans against the police and the SHO.

The district Nazim, Khursheed Junejo, and the DSP, Saddar, Akhtar Chandio, arrived there and assured the protesters that justice would be provided.

Reliable sources said that the Rasheed Wagan police arrested four people — Sher Mohammad Dayo, Abdul Hameed Soomro (both policemen posted at the police station), Naseem Brohi (the private bodyguard of SHO Abdul Majeed Brohi), and the complainant, Mehar Jat, for further investigation.

The police registered an FIR against SHO Brohi, three policemen, and two unknown private guards under section 324 QDA, 147, 148, and 149 PPC.
