THE news item ‘Walkout galore in Senate’ (Jan 22) has reported that the house unanimously passed a resolution to ask the government to nominate Bashir Ahmed Bilour for the Nobel Peace Prize.

However, before doing so, none of them reviewed the policies and procedures of the Nobel Prize Organisation.

If some of them even had visited the official website, before passing the resolution, they might have decided differently about the recognition of Mr Bilour’s role in halting terrorism.

But, instead of being serious, they acted naively. I am saying so because the Nobel Prize Organisation’s website, under the caption, ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ responds to a similar inquiry that “from 1974, the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation have stipulated that a prize cannot be awarded posthumously unless death has occurred after the announcement of the Nobel Prize.”

I wonder how long our august house will act as halls of ignorance and be a laughing stock.
