Showcase: Computers with five senses by 2018!

January 12, 2013

Good news for all computer geeks! IBM claims that by 2018, computers will have all five senses like touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. It is said that the vibrators within the computers will be designed in a way that they could mimic vibrations when your fingers touch a particular surface. IBM researchers claim to be creating applications for the healthcare and retail sector that use haptic, infrared or pressure sensitive technologies to simulate touch.

So within five years, your computer will be able to judge images by analysing colours, textures; they will also surpass doctor’s ability to read medical imagery, including MRIs, CT scans, X-rays and ultrasound.

Besides, IBM researchers are also developing technology to analyse odours in people’s breath that identify ailments such as, liver and kidney disorders, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy. These future computers will be able to make quick analyses for the problem and will also be able to detect harmful bacteria that cause infections in hospitals just by smelling the surroundings.

A new fish called Obama

Strange but true, the US president, Barack Obama is one of the four presidents to have a newly discovered species of fish named after them. Etheostoma Obama, a new species of fresh water fish of the perch family is named after the current president of the US.

“We chose President Obama for his environmental leadership, particularly in the areas of clean energy and environmental protection, and because he is one of our first leaders to approach conservation and environmental protection from a more global vision,” said researcher Steve Layman from Geosyntec Consultants in Georgia. This new species of fish has a lot of colour into its fairly diminutive dimensions, spends its life in the fast-moving freshwater rivers and creeks that are the veins of America. It gets its name from its ability to get around rocks and other obstacles on the bottom of waterways. It is a relatively skinny orange and

blue speckled fish topped by a brilliant fan-shaped fin, with bold orange stripes.
