WHILE commuting home from work, I frequent I.I. Chundrigar Road towards Shaheen Complex. Every day numerous cars create an extra lane by moving on to the lane reserved for the opposing traffic. This results in a deadlock when the oncoming traffic from Shaheen Complex is unable to clear.

The situation often lasts as long as three hours (and this is just to move from Habib Bank Plaza to Shaheen Complex). Not to mention the numerous motorcyclists who follow each other as if playing follow-the-leader.

What bothers me the most is that the drivers do not have common sense that if they start driving on the wrong side of the road, and there is no room for the oncoming traffic to move, then such a situation would create a deadlock and massive traffic jam as it often does.

And, these are all our well - educated people. To prove my point, here are two car number plates that I noted near GPO: AWB 322 (black Toyota Corolla) and ASZ 998 (grey Toyota Corolla). All the gentlemen drivers seemed to be well-educated, well-groomed and well-dressed.

But, don’t they stop and ponder even for a little second that this situation would result in a traffic horror for all, including themselves?

Really, it beats me to think about this and this is a classic failure of our education system. What was their education for?
