KHAIRPUR, Nov 17: The suspended work for the establishment of the Khairpur Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) would resume soon, Khairpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abbas Baloch told a meeting held here recently.

Presiding over the 9th meeting of the KSEZ steering committee, he said that the work had been suspended to facilitate a review of the master plan, adding that efforts were on to resume the work in due course of time.

Mr Baloch, said that in addition to the 136 acres of land available for the KSEZ, four acres of additional land had been acquired to set up a 20-megawatt power plant.

He said that the economic zone would have facilities like mosque, dispensary, human resource training and commercial centres. Besides, a police picket would be set up and Rangers personnel would be deployed to maintain law and order, he added.

The meeting also discussed a proposal regarding availability of a date market adjacent to the KSEZ. The committee members stressed the need for providing basic facilities to the economic zone at the earliest.

Former Sindh Board of Investment secretary, Naheed Shah, said that the project was aimed at creating economic opportunities within the region and also promoting indigenous industries at the national and international levels.

Officials from development and power sector departments, businessmen and industrialists were also present.

Before attending the meeting, a delegation of the steering committee visited the KSEZ sites earmarked for development work.
