KARACHI, Oct 7: Favourite two-year-old bay filly Tiffney and second favourite four-year-old dark bay colt The Dictator, both tipped by Dawn, swept the two cup races in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse here on Sunday.

Tiffney, who made her debut in The Kingree Lodge Performance Cup last Sunday (Sept 30) and finished off the board, made amends by returning with flying colours in The Upcoming Stars Stakes to open her account. She got the better of colt Ideal by three-and-a-half lengths.

Colt Rainbow Star was placed third while filly Dancing Queen completed the frame among seven starters.

Owned by Zain Rahim and trained by M. Rafiq K, the victorious filly was galloped to victory by rider Fahim K.

With The Sprinter Champion Cup under his belt, colt The Dictator beat fancied colt Macho Man as he pleased by 10 lengths to add The Sanghar Cup to his list of glories for repeat success.

The winning horse set the pace right from the start in the race run over six furlongs to post a commendable win with seasoned jockey Ghulam Shabbir II astride. The filly belonged to the stables of Syed Zulfiqar Shah and partnered by trainer Mujahid Ali.

One Way II and Shan-e-Sindh followed the two in same order in a field of seven horses.

Former Olympian Islahuddin Siddiqui, who graced the races, awarded the glittering cups to the winning owners in the paddock amidst applause. KRC chairman Brig (retd) Iftikhar Haider, secretary Ali Akbar Shah Rashdi and stewards Kamal Farooq and Irfan Mehdi were also present.

Apart from the cups, Dawn had two more winners in filly Eye Noor and colt Sher Ka Bacha.

The former made it two on trot when he shocked fancied bay horse Aar Paar by two and three-quarter-of-a-length in the second race while the latter ridden by Mohammad Essa obliged punters with fluent seven lengths victory over Koo Koo Love in the sixth.

Earlier, at the outset, outsider bay horse Over Flow edged favourite Black Berry by one length while public fancy mare Sugar Baby justified her credentials by imposing to a seven-length victory over Eager Saint in the third.

The day, however, ended on a sour note following cancellation of the seventh and last race after being run amid protest from the crowd.

Soon after the race, Concept, Black Cobra, Rytham and Espada appeared on the board with a photo-finish among the first two.

After a while, Black Cobra was declared winner beating Concept by head and it was displayed on the board which led to protest from the crowd who allegedly felt cheated. The KRC stewards eventually cancelled the race.
