LANDI KOTAL, Oct 6: Five peace volunteers were killed and six others injured in clashes with a group of militants in Akkakhel area of Bara tehsil in Khyber Agency on Friday night.Political administration officials said fierce clashes took place between the banned militant group Lashkar-i-Islam and volunteers of Akkakhel Peace Committee in Haji Gula Khan Bagh near Sheen Drand.

The LI men attacked the volunteers and gunbattle lasted for several hours.

The deceased were identified as Bagh Mar Jan, Hassan Jan, Habib Pekhawarai, Qeemat Khan and Waris Khan.

The militants destroyed the peace committee’s Pul-i-Sirat base and took away a vehicle. Members of the Akkakhel Peace Committee claimed to have killed seven LI militants but their claim could not be independently verified.
