I WANT to highlight an extremely important issue before the public through these columns. It is regarding police uniform.
The presence of the Sindh police in Karachi’s streets makes citizens feel better. However, the way they wear their uniform is quite weird.
Police personnel whether standing on roadsides or moving through the streets wear untidy and dusty uniforms. They are absolutely careless regarding the proper use of their uniform.
For example, usually their shirts can be seen coming out of the pants and sleeves folded up to the elbows. This behaviour is awkward and presents an irresponsible image of the police before the public.
The concept of uniform, especially, in the police force, is largely associated with the devoted and sophisticated function of the department.
Unfortunately, our police personnel have never acknowledged the fact. The practice can be taken as one of the reasons as to why the public is usually pessimistic regarding the service of our police.
If our policemen start wearing clean and tidy uniform, it will stimulate an optimistic behaviour from citizens towards them. Last, I would like to place two important suggestions: the authorities concerned must assure that good quality cloth is used to stitch policemen’s uniforms.
Also, there must be a washroom and laundry in every police station.
