Two killed on road

ATTOCK, Sept 16: Two cattle traders were killed and another was injured in a road accident near Chacch Interchange on Islamabad- Peshawar Motorway (M-1) in the jurisdiction of the Hazro police.   Police said a mini-truck loaded with cattle was going to Swat from Gujranwala when it overturned near Chacch Interchange due to speeding on Saturday evening.  As a result, Salaem Khan and Ghulab Khan died on the spot while Shehzad Khan sustained injuries.

The truck driver identified as Shabeer Awan escaped from the scene after the accident. — Correspondent

SHOs reshuffled

TAXILA, Sept 16: City Police Officer Rawalpindi Azhar Hameed Khokar has reshuffled the station house officers of all the three police stations of Taxila subdivision.

Sources said SHO Taxila Sardar Shakeel Ahmed was transferred to Wah Cantt while Zulfiqar Ahmed was sent to Wah Saddar police station. Besides, Malik Mohammad Khan has been transferred to Taxila police station. The sources said more transfers were expected in the next couple of days. — Correspondent

Safety measures on highway

FATEHJANG, Sept 16: Social and political figures here have asked the chairman National Highway Authority (NHA) to take safety measures on the G.T. Road passing through the city to avoid accidents.

Accidents have increased alarmingly on the highway that passes through congested residential areas. The residents have time and again drawn the attention of the NHA chairman towards the issue but he has not taken any action, said Sardar Tariq Mehmood, a former member of the district council of Attock. Talking to local reporters here, he said the NHA was earning huge income through taxes by installing toll plazas at various points on the highway but was not providing safety measures to the commuters. Mr Tariq demanded of the chairman NHA to construct a road bypassing the city for heavy traffic leading towards Kohat, Bannu, Sargodha, Mianwali, Multan and Karachi. — Correspondent

Stolen car recovered

ATTOCK, Sept 16: The anti-car lifting cell arrested three alleged auto-thieves along with the recovery of a stolen vehicle. Police said a patrolling team recovered the stolen car and also held Abdul Rashid, Mohammad Nazakut and Mohammad Atif, residents of Attock, at Mullah Mansoor checkpost on Saturday night. The accused told the police that they had lifted the vehicle from Rawalpindi and were taking it to Peshawar. — Correspondent

Smuggling attempt foiled

RAWALPINDI, Sept 16:  The Anti-Narcotic Force foiled a smuggling attempt of narcotics to Spain and arrested a passenger travelling from Islamabad to Spain, at Benazir Bhutto International Airport on Sunday.

According to the airport authorities, the seizure was made when the check-in of Etihad Airways flight for Abu Dhabi was in progress at the airport.

One of the passengers who later identified as Javaid Iqbal was spotted acting suspiciously by the Anti-Narcotics Force staff during the check-in of passengers for Abu Dhabi and was taken into custody. During search, the ANF staff recovered 6 kg of heroin concealed in the cavities of the suitcase.

The suspect who belonged to Gujrat was arrested and shifted to the ANF police station. — Staff Reporter

Bounced cheque

RAWALPINDI, Sept 16: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) lodged a criminal case against a man for giving him a bogus cheque worth Rs7.89 million against buying more than one hundred kanals of land, police said.

Chaudhry Tanveer Khan, a resident of Chaklala Scheme III lodged a complaint with the Saddar Barooni police; stating that he sold a piece of land measuring 112 kanals and 9 marlas and located at Dhallah village, to one Abu Zar who gave him a cheque of Rs7.8 million.

After the cheque was dishonored by the concerned commercial bank, the Saddar Barooni police registered a case under the relevant section of the case against the accused on the complaint of former PML-N MPA and started raids to arrest the accused. — Staff Reporter

Traffic signals

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: A proposal is under consideration to convert traffic signals in the city to solar energy.

As a pilot project, traffic signals at Dhokri Chowk near Serena Hotel have been converted to solar energy while the cabinet division in consultation with the Islamabad Traffic Police has initiated work on the proposal to convert other signals, said an official source on Sunday.—APP
