GILGIT, Sept 9: Leading Sunni and Shia ulema sat together in Chinar Bagh here on Sunday after combined efforts of parliamentary committee of lawmakers and Masajid Boards to discuss ways for restoring peace in Gilgit.

The function was organised by the administration and addressed by Qazi Nisar Ahmed and Aga Rahatul Hussaini. People of Gilgit have welcomed the meeting wherein the ulema read out a code of conduct prepared by Masajid Boards and a joint declaration aimed at promoting unity among Muslims.

Mr Hussaini asked the chief minister and the government officials to do justice in their respective responsibilities, as violence took place due to injustices. He called upon the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan to forge unity for peace.

Mr Ahmed stressed the need for tolerance and criticised the GB government for poor law and order situation. He said that several peace agreements were inked but none was implemented, which showed failure on part of the government.

Chief Minister Mehdi Shah said on the occasion that he was happy over the meeting and promised that all peace agreements finalised by the parliamentary committee and Masajid Boards would be implemented. He said that the two bodies and their decisions enjoyed support of the government.

Mr Ahmed and Mr Hussaini shook hands after the function and the participants greeted them and organisers of the meeting.

Strict security measures were adopted on this occasion.
