KARACHI, Aug 16: An anti-terrorism court on Thursday granted bail to Dr Akmal Waheed, a cardiologist, who was arrested for the violation of the fourth schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.

The ATC-1 headed by Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso gave him bail in the sum of Rs50,000 and ordered his release if his custody was not required in any other case.The doctor was taken into custody on Aug 8 upon his return from the UAE for his alleged violation of the restriction imposed on him under the ATA schedule as he left the country in 2008 without informing the police.

Advocate Mohammad Farooq, counsel for the applicant, submitted that his client’s detention was unlawful as he did not violate any section of the anti-terrorism law.

The ATC had reserved its order on the bail application on Monday.

According to Advocate Farooq, Dr Akmal Waheed was not released on Thursday.
